Have you heard of Fort Portal?

It's not just the tourism capital of Uganda. It's also home to the TOORO CULTURAL AND CONSERVATION EDUCATION CENTRE , where we combine traditional knowledge with contemporary methods to promote the coexistence of people and wildlife.

At TCRD (Tooro Cultural Research and Development), we believe that conservation begins with people. Former generations were guided by deep ecological knowledge and cultural practices that enabled a sustainable use of resources.

🐒 The wildlife and biodiversity of the Tooro region are unparalleled. Kibale National Park is home to the largest population of chimpanzees in Uganda, and the region is home to numerous endemic species of wildlife and plant life that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. However, this biodiversity is under threat from habitat destruction, land degradation and, unsustainable practices. Human-wildlife conflicts endanger the lives of people and animals alike.

🌱To help people and wildlife thrive together our conservation education programmes use culturally rooted methods, such as storytelling around the Ekyoto (the traditional fireplace), alongside contemporary educational tools. This enables communities to reconnect with their heritage and empowers them to become stewards of the land.
